There are many unusual types of clouds. Some of the common descriptive terms are as follows.


Types of Cloud:




  • Altus (alto) meaning 'height'
  • Capillatus meaning 'having hair'
  • Castellanus meaning 'castle-like battlements'
  • Cirrus (cirro) meaning 'lock or tuft of hair'
  • Congestus meaning 'piled up'
  • Cumuliform meaning 'heap'(heaped)
  • Floccus meaning 'tufted'
  • Fractus meaning 'broken, irregular or ragged'
  • Humilis meaning 'flattened'
  • Lenticularis meaning 'lens or almond shaped'
  • Mamma meaning 'udder or protuberance'
  • Nimbus meaning 'rain cloud'
  • Pileus meaning 'cap or hood'
  • Stratiform meaning 'flat' (flattened)
